Roy Boy is my memoir about growing up in Fitzroy during a very different era.
It was a time when Fitzroy was regarded as a working-class, inner-city suburb — a close-knit community with its share of characters, ratbags, drunks and crooks.
As a cheeky and adventurous boy, I roamed the streets and nearby haunts looking for fun and adventure.Sometimes I found considerably more than I bargained for.
Growing up as the son of migrant parents, I experienced the challenges, humour, friendships and adventures that shaped my childhood — including experiences that eventually took me into trouble with authorities and away from my family.
Roy Boy is a story about childhood, family, migration, resilience, community and survival.
But above all, it is a story about growing up.
